What is the latest food 'fashion' in France? Snail eggs. Yes, you read that correctly - snail eggs - also known as snail caviar. According to an article I found on snail eggs, they are 'small, cream-coloured pearls that burst on the palate to reveal what the producers describe as subtle autumn flavours with woody notes.'. Really? Snail eggs are taking off and cost only $115 per 50g according to the article. In fact, the article goes on to make the statement "Chefs are very interested by the colour, the texture and the subtle flavour. It's a real creative challenge for them." I'll bet!
The idea of eating snails even heavily disguised in garlic is enough to make me vomit but snail eggs on toast...
I would guess that chefs must find it a challenge to find a way to make snail eggs palatable to the average restaurant going crowd but you know, if they make them seem expensive, exotic and 'in', some idiot will buy them just to be in too. And before you know it, snail eggs on toast will be on menus at every pseudo French style eatery in existence.
And Now Also Cat Poop Coffee
Another delicacy in the news today that falls into the yuk category is Cat Poop Coffee - yep, it too is expensive and all the rage with the in crowd....
