Here in Brno in the Czech Republic, everyone is puzzled by the case of the perpetual teenager. Initially, local police discovered an 8-year old boy bound and naked in a broom cupboard. Ondrej, who is hearing impaired, was being abused by his mother.
But then the case took an unexpected turn when it was discovered that Ondrej's adopted 13-year old sister was in fact 34-years old! Anna, or Anicka as she's called here, went missing shortly after she, Ondrej, and their brother Jakub were taken into care at a children's home.
DNA test results however showed that Anicka is in fact a 34-year-old woman named Barbora Skrlova who worked for Ondrej's aunt at the children's home.
According to a number of press reports here, little Ondrej's whole family was involved in something called the 'Grail Movement', variously described as a new religious movement or a cult. Police have even indicated that the Czech chapter of this international group was involved in both Anicka's disappearance and Ondrej's abuse. A member of the Grail Movement has confirmed there was contact with the family, but denies involvement in any wrongdoing.
The case has since captured international attention after it was discovered that Anicka had absconded to Norway where she successfully pretended to be a 13-year old boy. On discovery, she was returned to the Czech Republic were she was arrested and now awaits trial - though on what charges is yet to be discovered. Funnily enough all that she brought back with her from Norway was a teddy bear and a children's book!
The case appears shrouded in mystery here in Brno where Anicka is being held. No one appears to know much about her role in the child abuse and how long she has been pretending to be a teenager nor why she would in fact do that. It is the top story on the TV news every evening and discussed over cold Czech beer in all of the bars here.
It truly is a bizarre story and one I will follow being here on the spot in Brno...
Update
It is being reported here that Anicka's lawyer is trying to obtain bail for her to have her released from prison.
