Doomsday cultists emerge from cave
Submitted by Rant Man on Tue, 04/01/2008 - 10:07am.An emergency official says another 14 members of a cult that has been holed up in a cave for months awaiting the end of the world have come out.
Seven other cult members came out of the cave in the Penza region, about 400 miles southeast of Moscow, three days ago.
The 14 that emerged Tuesday are in satisfactory condition, regional emergency spokesman Dmitry Yeskin said.
Melting snow had caused part of the cave to collapse, leading to fears that the remaining cult members, which include four young children, could be killed.
Thirty-five people entered the cave in early November to await the end of the world, which they said would happen in May.
They told authorities they would detonate gas canisters if police tried to remove them
The Global Warming Scam
Submitted by Rant Man on Tue, 04/01/2008 - 1:15pm.I read that Al Gore (my hasn't he aged and got uglier?) is heading up yet another 'Global Warming' campaign.... yawn. Don't you love this guy getting richer and richer off of this issue? But scrutinize his real behavior - his carbon footprint so to speak - and we find him traveling around in private and public jets guzzling gasoline, jet fuel and issuing carbon like there was no tomorrow.
He is a pompous ass and takes us all for fools while he laughs all the way to the bank in his push for a one world government (that is really what this is all about). I wish someone would show him for the idiot he truly is ("The father of the Internet!"). Al - do us all a favor - retire and stop boring us you old (carbon dioxide exhaling) wind bag.
Gratuitous Violence anyone?
Submitted by Rant Man on Wed, 04/02/2008 - 10:57am.Has anyone pondered how we arrived at a time when gratuitous sex and violence is a day-to-day feature of life? Turn on the TV, go to the movies or buy a PC game and the thing that strikes you immediately is how did we get here?
The popularity of maim, kill and torture movies like 'Hostel', the free availability of videos on the Internet that once might be described as 'snuff' movies that show people being killed and the volume of freely available hard core pornography must surely be having an impact on society?
It wasn't long ago that some of the PC games now available for teenagers would have caused incredible controversy. Not now, it seems we simply now accept games depicting murder, drug dealing, crime and sex as simply fantasies.
But how did this happen? How did this all inadvertently creep up on us to the point that for many people all of this is acceptable? How is it that mainstream society now simply shrugs its shoulders and accepts it? When will the backlash begin?
Finally an Addiction That's Good for Me
Submitted by Rant Man on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 10:11am.The first thing I do every morning is reach bleary eyed for a cup of coffee. Combined with a nice hot shower, I begin to feel human again. But damn I love coffee and drink too much of the stuff. But all is well in Rant Man land because according to a BBC article - the stuff is actually good for you! Amazing.
Coffee, it seems, cuts the risk of dementia and Alzheimers.... The BBC article explains how in some detail. But just a minute.... the research was based on feeding coffee to rabbits! More research is required to confirm the effect on humans but it seems Caffeine is a 'safe' drug'. Awesome.
Now I can enjoy my black thick coffee without feeling guilty knowing that somewhere Rabbits stoned on Caffeine have proved that this stuff is good for me and you. I wonder if that scientist had dementia?
Isn't She Georgeous
Submitted by Rant Man on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 12:36pm.CNN, Americans and Geography....
Submitted by Rant Man on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 8:15am.I guess these days CNN isn't known for its accuracy in news anymore. Overseas we all sit waiting for it's latest goof and they happen frequently. One can only assume that the well publicized lack of geographical knowledge among Americans in general simply expresses itself in CNN's errors.
What am I talking about you ask?
Well, CNN consistently produces maps that are simply wrong, identifies foreign politicians incorrectly, uses the wrong flags for countries it is reporting on or from and generally just screws up more than an organization committed to delivering world news should. Frankly, it's pathetic that CNN can't get it's facts correct.
Let's show and example shall we....

The Bigger Half
Submitted by Rant Man on Sun, 04/06/2008 - 3:11pm.Oh No - It's Monday
Submitted by Rant Man on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 8:18am.Monday. The beginning of another week. I wonder if it isn't long past memories of having to go to school on a Monday after a lazy weekend that makes me hate it so? Whatever it is, I hate Mondays - just like the Boomtown Rats song.
The weekend is just long enough to forget. Forget the long to do list, the tiresome project that needs to be started next week. It's just long enough to forget all the things I need to do during the coming week. So I spend the first 2-3 hours on a Monday trying to figure out what I need to do and the list seems to grow and grow. It doesn't matter how many coffees I drink, Monday is miserable.
Monday is "Moon day". But my Monday's always feel like a moonless dark night. A day sent to add a gray hair and a wrinkle or two more to my face. Moon day - sort of conveys the idea of reflection and luminosity as opposed to a gray day full of slog and sudden realizations of something else I forgot to do last week.
I hate Monday's.
Pizza.com Nets Owner a Cool 2.6 million Dollars
Submitted by Rant Man on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 2:54pm.The BBC is carrying a story today of a man in the USA who has paid his $20 per year hosting fees for www.pizza.com since 1994 but last week sold the site at auction for a cool $2.6 million USD. Not a bad return...
You can find the actual story at this link.
Time to start digging through those domains you all pay for and see if there is anything you can sell too....
Does Owning A BMW Make You Special?
Submitted by Rant Man on Tue, 04/08/2008 - 7:39am.What is it about owning a BMW (or Audi, or Benz) that apparently makes you think that the law doesn't apply to you? I haven't done true statistical analysis but it seems to me that whenever I am driving at the speed limit there is a BMW inches behind me attempting to push me to go faster and, at the earliest opportunity, whizzing by me to zoom on down the road like a rocket. Even if passing puts me, them and everyone else in danger?
I have owned several Benz myself and I know that you feel safe and it also feels that you are going slower than you are in such a car but come on....
It seems to me based on observation that many drivers of luxury German vehicles simple believe that they are beyond the law. Because they drive such a car, they are entitled to be the bully of the road, shoving everyone else out of the way rudely in there need for road dominance.

The Color Magenta
Submitted by Rant Man on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 7:38am.Thinking about a logo for your business? Well - hands off the color Magenta! That's because T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) has trademarked the color.... They are writing warning letters to other businesses that use the color in their logo asking them to cease and desist.
The question I want to ask is how can you own a color? I mean I think I'd like to own the color red - how do I go about it? That way, I could charge all companies using red in their logo a license fee and simply retire. Who allowed a company to trademark a color and why?
CNN Bias - Is it for Clinton or Obama?
Submitted by Rant Man on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 9:14am.Is it me or is CNN biased for Hilary "I mis-spoke" Clinton? Last night they covered her going on and on and on (and on and on and on) about Iraq. The other night they gave Obama a few seconds talking about MLK and then we got to watch Clinton go on and on and on (and on and on...) about how upset she was the day MLK was shot....
It just seems to me that CNN give this lady way too much air time as compared to Obama. But, maybe I have it wrong. Maybe CNN is biased to Obama and is simply letting us all see what a wind bag Clinton is as she drones and drones and drones....and mis-speaks.
I heard her talking about withdrawing troops from Iraq and for a minute I thought she was saying she'd withdraw from the race... Wishful thinking that her giant ego would ever consider such a thing. And is her voice more boring to listen to than Bill (I did not have sex with that woman) Clinton or what?
And while I'm on the topic, no wonder they didn't want to release their tax return. My goodness did they make some money. How can anyone making minimum wage or even $100,000 a year believe that two rich kids who appear to be unable to speak the truth at any point in time could truly have any interest in their welfare? The Clintons are about one thing and one thing only - The Clintons (on and in Bill's case - Women).
Sheer Audacity but Crime Apparently Pays
Submitted by Rant Man on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 12:29pm.In 2003, news broke in the Czech Republic that a 19-year old man who worked as a waiter in a small Czech town was to face 8-years in jail for a series of unbelievable pranks. Buying a suit and tie, Lukas Kohout set off to Prague, walked into a government office and convinced an official there that he was an assistant to a major politician. He then proceeded to commandeer official government jets and make trips to the Maldives, Peru and Sri Lanka at the expense of the Government! He would apparently have got away with these stunts had the flight not ran into a problem in that it didn't have permission to fly across India.
With nerves of steel and a new suit, Lukas was able to take his friends on dream trips and all on the Czech taxpayer. Of course, the incident sparked a furor and Lukas faced millions of Czech Crowns in fines and jail time for his stunt. But there he was this week as a guest on breakfast TV here in the Czech Republic apparently making a mint in personal appearances on various TV shows. There is even talk of a movie being made for which he will get paid handsomely. Who says crime doesn't pay? He is famous here and making a good living off his notoriety.
There's nothing new in this of course as the recent prostitution scandal in New York shows. The prostitute there is already rich and getting richer as a result of her notoriety....
Oh well.....
Assaulted with a Hedgehog and Other Unusual Weapons
Submitted by Rant Man on Thu, 04/10/2008 - 7:36am.I had to laugh this morning as I read the news on the BBC website. In New Zealand a man was charged with assault - with a hedgehog! Apparently, he threw a hedgehog at a 15-year lad who was bruised and punctured on the leg. The police confirmed that the man had been arrested "for assault with a weapon, namely the hedgehog." See the full story here.
Now I wonder what other unusual instruments have been used to assault people with so I did a quick Google search. Here is what I found;
1. A schoolboy in Sussex was charged for assaulting another pupil with a bread roll;
2. A woman in the USA was charged for assault using a home made air blow gun from a drinking straw;
3. There is also the case of the female attorney in the US who filed assault charges on another attorney for an overly aggressive handshake!
I also found the following items used as a weapon; a pitchfork, a tomato, a sandwich, a bag of crisps and best of all - a dildo!
Oh well... silliness never stops it seems.

Food Glorious Food
Submitted by Rant Man on Thu, 04/10/2008 - 2:35pm.Sometimes I blog about strange foods on this site but don't get me wrong. I adore food. And I even bake - usually scones but also cakes and buns. I also like to cook and have learned a number of new dishes here in the Czech Republic. That's why I find this website/community so compelling - Food Connect.
Food Connect is a place that you can share recipes, offer your reviews of various wines, drinks and foods and generally interact with other 'foodies'. You can also list our food events there as a member for free and I was rather amused to find an event listed as a 'pie eating contest' along with the instruction to "Stuff Your Face with Pies!".
Spring is in the Air
Submitted by Rant Man on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 10:31am.Spring.... blue skies and sun with that warmth that hints of summer, vacations and beer drank on the terrace. But spring brings something else too. All of a sudden it seems that there are beautiful women everywhere and the question is is that where were they all winter?
According to some research I did it seems that the girls were there all the time but spring has some kind of impact on the guys... its like breeding season is coming soon and unconsciously they start to notice women again. It must be some throw back to the cave man era I guess when the dark nights started getting lighter and the days a bit warmer and thoughts turned from sheer survival to reproduction. I often wonder if women notice guys more when spring comes around too?
But whatever it is, spring is in the air and I'm starting to look forward to a vacation.
Skoda Shame
Submitted by Rant Man on Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:00pm.Czech car manufacturer Skoda (pronounced shkoda) actually makes some pretty good cars probably helped by the fact that it is now owned by VW. But did you know that skoda in Czech means 'shame'?. My question is why would anyone call their car company a shame?
Life of Lemski
Submitted by Rant Man on Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:12pm.I came across a blog recently hosted at livejournal. I had actually never heard of livejournal but it seems to provide some pretty good facilities for bloggers wanting to do something of a personal blog. Life of Lemski is exactly that. It's a personal blog and makes interesting reading.
Some articles are personal rambles by the blogger that leaves you asking 'what the hell is this person talking about?' simply because they discuss the blogger's personal life, friends and situation. It's touching that those posts often refer to friends of the blogger by name - making it even more personal. You find yourself obtaining glimpses of someone else's life.. and that's a treat even if it isn't that clear what they are talking about - or as the blogger states - is rambling about.
But those posts are interspersed with poetry - some of it quite excellent, useful articles about topics such as website hosting, the Internet, travel articles and a whole lot more. The sheer variety comes as a surprise and something of a shock - we live in a society in which bloggers can address a variety of topics and do so with expertise, humor and PERSONALITY. That's what I enjoy about blogs and why this one is so engaging.
So why not stop by and see what you think? Life of Lemski.
Brian May I Congratulate You
Submitted by Rant Man on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 11:03am.Brian May of Queen is in the news today after being installed as Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. But it's not that fact that makes me want to congratulate Mr. May... it's that he finally finished his PhD and is actually Dr. Brian May - Queen Guitarist.
May did complete his undergraduate degree and started a PhD in Astrophysics before deciding to pursue a career with Freddie and crew as part of Queen. Congrats for making in retrospect a wise career choice because I imagine he has made a lot more cash than a University Professor would and likely had a lot more fun while doing it. But he didn't give up on his PhD. He actually returned to his research and completed his PhD in 2007 after a gap of 30-years. Now that is amazing.
What a life these rock stars have. First he gets to be a real rock star and then the academic he always wanted to be... even becoming a University Chancellor in the process.
Congrats Dr. May and may your guitar forever rock! I guess you can fund your own research too?
I am somewhat proud to say that I hail from Hull - Kingston Upon Hull - to be precise. A rather poorly known city on the North East coast of England. It's not the prettiest city by any means and the local accent isn't that pleasant either (I'm a marked man because that accent gives my roots away when in the UK despite having not actually lived in Hull for 20+ years). But, it's surrounded by some of the prettiest countryside you can find and, these days, has a lot more going for it than it once did. People from Hull get used to puns on the name like the one I used in the title of this post and we have also got used to clever media types thinking the were the first to title an article "to hull and back". There is also that old saying - "Hull, Hell and Huddersfield" OK - something like that anyway.
So what am I wittering on about?
Hull City AFC that's what - The TIGERS. 104 years of professional soccer and never in the Premier league. The biggest city in England never to have had a premier league team.
I've been following the Tigers since I was a lad. I used to go to home games at Boothferry Park in the 60's. Back then, you could as a kid sit on the concrete wall surrounding the field - awesome. When I moved to the US, I followed the Tigers on the Internet resolutely checking in each week even as they languished at the bottom end of the old 4th Division.
