Sheer Audacity but Crime Apparently Pays
In 2003, news broke in the Czech Republic that a 19-year old man who worked as a waiter in a small Czech town was to face 8-years in jail for a series of unbelievable pranks. Buying a suit and tie, Lukas Kohout set off to Prague, walked into a government office and convinced an official there that he was an assistant to a major politician. He then proceeded to commandeer official government jets and make trips to the Maldives, Peru and Sri Lanka at the expense of the Government! He would apparently have got away with these stunts had the flight not ran into a problem in that it didn't have permission to fly across India.
With nerves of steel and a new suit, Lukas was able to take his friends on dream trips and all on the Czech taxpayer. Of course, the incident sparked a furor and Lukas faced millions of Czech Crowns in fines and jail time for his stunt. But there he was this week as a guest on breakfast TV here in the Czech Republic apparently making a mint in personal appearances on various TV shows. There is even talk of a movie being made for which he will get paid handsomely. Who says crime doesn't pay? He is famous here and making a good living off his notoriety.
There's nothing new in this of course as the recent prostitution scandal in New York shows. The prostitute there is already rich and getting richer as a result of her notoriety....
Oh well.....
