American Football was the top CNN story when I logged on this morning namely the Superbowl. Who cares? American Football is a bunch of overpaid, over exposed, macho men with silly degrees in landscaping and recreational studies who push each other up and down a field. It's also a spectacularly unsuccessful US export to a world that watches soccer - also football.
While I lived in the US, I got quite into Football as a game. The rules became clear and I really quite enjoyed it but it's spoiled by artificial breaks for TV advertising all the time and spokespeople for the game who in the most part can't string a sentence together without resorting to phrases such as 'you know', 'you know what I mean' and 'you know what I am saying'. Actually no - I don't have a clue what they are saying most of the time.... except to tell us the most banal tripe I ever heard.

You see it goes back to America's screwed up education system where a gifted and talented kid with Einstein's intellect but the body of a drawing pin ends up paying over $100,000 (or his/her parents do) to get a college education while some thick as pig poop overweight 'athlete' on steroids gets a free ride at the top colleges simply because he can play 'Football'. And it doesn't stop there. Oh no. These boneheads end up being treated like prissy princesses and educational standards are lowered so they can take degrees in knitting, candle making and anything else that might pass muster as an education just so they can play football. America - wake up! That's why the country is such a mess because you have your priorities all wrong! After maybe 6-years of college, if he is lucky enough, he gets drafted into the NFL where he gets paid a fortune and occasionally gets to astound us on TV with his command of the English language.
Then there is the actual NFL season. If you as much as blink, you miss it and then its back to that other boring monstrosity of a 'game' - baseball.
Meanwhile, as I said above, the rest of the world is watching soccer and couldn't give a jot about the Super Bowl. American's just don't get soccer. To them it's a game for women and kids. a bunch of wimps running around chasing a round ball that, if you are lucky, occasionally goes into that goal. To American's soccer is boredom central with results like 0-0 and 1-0 versus Football where it's end to end stuff and scores can be in triple digits.
Actually, I enjoy both sports. I do think both are over hyped and take up far too much space in people's lives but that's another story. I do think that the two games speak to the vast cultural divide between American's and everyone else in the world but I will say this. Going to a game, whether Football or Baseball, in the US is a spectacular occasion. Further, it's safe and whole families sit together and share the experience. The brutality is on the field not in the stands. And that's a whole lot more than you can say for soccer these days....
